Lifetime Service Award – Ellis Goldstein

During each Support Raising Leaders Conference, we recognize a life-long champion of personal support raising who has given decades to the service of others in this critical area of ministry.  It was our honor to recognize Ellis Goldstein, Director of Ministry Partnership Development with Cru, with the Lifetime Service Award for Pioneering Biblical MPD Training at the Support Raising Leaders Conference in Orlando, Florida November 9, 2021. Growing up Jewish, Ellis became a Christian at Penn State University through the ministry of Cru. After graduation he went on staff with Cru, investing his early years ministering to students at Boston […]

In Defense of Second-Class Missionaries

Imagine what it would look like if western churches hired their staff with the same priorities that they choose overseas missionaries to financially support. First of all, a Children’s Pastor would definitely be out.  Not strategic enough; he’s only supporting the children of believers.  Youth Pastor?  Also out, unless he targets neighborhood kids. How about a Music Pastor?  Or Pastoral Counselor?  Nope.  Those are just support roles.  Not enough front-line ministry. Administrative Pastor?  Receptionist?  Good heavens.  We could never dream of paying someone for those kind of inconsequential jobs. How about a Preaching Pastor?  Well…..that’s if-y, but he probably doesn’t make the cut either.  After […]

Building a Solid Foundation in MPD

Look, I get it. You have finally wrapped your mind around the idea that you will be raising monthly support in order to get your ongoing paychecks. You are compelled by the ministry, and are taking a step of faith because God is great, able, and good. But then they tell you that you also need to raise a giant lump sum to pay for the training! The same training where they teach you to raise the support! Like, before they tell you how! This moment, right here, puts that new resolve to trust God with your finances in ministry […]

How to Coach Around Limiting Beliefs

When was the last time you were coaching someone and they just wanted to give up? What was the reason they gave you? If it was anything other than “I did my best and learned a lesson–and I will do better next time,” then they were letting limiting beliefs get in the way of achieving their goals. Limiting beliefs are often deeply ingrained into people–so much so that they are not even aware of them. As a coach, how can we help people to overcome their limiting beliefs?  First we need to understand what limiting beliefs are. Simply, they are […]

My Support Raising Journey: All for God’s Purposes

“This isn’t about you.” After my first week of support raising, I was pretty burnt out. Over five days I had met with ten people and didn’t receive a firm commitment from anyone. I had a lot of “Let me get back to you” and a couple of noes. I was tired from the many phone calls, text messages, and conversations I had from my support meetings. I was thinking to myself, “What have I signed myself up for? Is this going to take longer than I had planned? I thought I did everything right. Why isn’t God holding his […]

Defeating Fear through Faith

As believers we know that God is on throne (Psalms 47:4) and that He loves and cares for us.  That is a comforting truth we should remind ourselves of in uncertain and unprecedented times. We are commanded, “Do not fear” over and over in the scripture.  It’s one of the most repeated commands by the Lord because of our human tendency towards fear and anxiety.  I know I’ve had to fight through my own emotions of fear and anxiety in my own quiet times with God in the last few days. This Coronavirus health and financial crisis has created a […]

Spiritual Health Exam for the New Year: Look Up, Look In, Look Out

Wouldn’t it be nice if while getting our annual physical exam we could also get a spiritual exam? We could go to a clinic, step on a scale, get spiritual blood work, and feel the squeeze of the spiritual pressure cup. Then afterwards, we would receive a list of supplements to take and exercises to do to become more spiritually healthy. When it comes to spiritual health, sometimes I just want to say, “Tell me how I am doing and give me a list of what to do to improve. I will do it!” If only it were that easy. […]

RESONATE with HIS Heart: 2021 Support Raising Leaders Conference

There is no greater tuning point than aligning our vision, efforts, and hearts to Jesus’. This year’s Support Raising Leaders Conference we explored what it means to resonate with Christ.  SRLC aimed that out of our worship of Jesus we would RESONATE with HIS heart for: the nations unity in our ministries personal transformation.  441 leaders from 116 organizations representing over 100,000 great commission workers worshiped, prayed, and learned together how we can collectively send more laborers and keep more laborers on the field.  The delay that the conference experienced due to COVID served to heighten everyone’s excitement to be […]

7 Simple, Yet Powerful, Principles to Empower Your Ministry

I’ll be honest. Raising financial support for my ministry is not one of my favorite things to do. I’ve discovered that it is much easier to keep the partners I have than to continually find new ones.  Henri Nouwen in A Spirituality of Fundraising said, we are offering “people the chance to invest what they have in the work of God. Whether they have much or little is not as important as the possibility of making their money available to God.” Nouwen’s words changed my perspective on partnership development. Up to that point, it had seemed like work and drudgery. […]
